TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION

The use of an orange shirt as a symbol was inspired by the accounts of Phyllis Jack Webstad, whose personal clothing—including a new orange shirt—was taken from her during her first day of residential schooling, and never returned. The orange shirt is thus used as a symbol of the forced assimilation of Indigenous children that the residential school system enforced.

Phyllis is now the Founder and Ambassador of the Orange Shirt Society, and tours the country telling her story and raising awareness about the impacts of the residential school system.

We are marking Orange Shirt Day - Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, by educating ourselves about truth and reconciliation and residential schools. We are committed to continuing these efforts in the weeks and months ahead.

This day officially honours residential school survivors and Indigenous cultures as steps toward reconciliation. The federal government designated Sept. 30 a federal holiday in 2021 as the Truth and Reconciliation - also known as Orange Shirt Day.
