Change in Royal Greenland's board: Niels Thomsen is new chairman
The former deputy chairman replaces Maliina B. Abelsen, who steps down as chairperson of Royal Greenland's board after an extraordinary general meeting.
Royal Greenland held an extraordinary general meeting today as a follow-up to the company's ordinary general meeting in the spring.
At the meeting, Niels Thomsen was appointed as the new chairman of Royal Greenland's board. He replaces Maliina B. Abelsen, who has held the position since 2022.
"I am grateful for the trust the owner has shown in me by choosing me as chairman of Royal Greenland. When asked to take on a responsibility of this significance, one cannot say no – especially when considering the company's role and importance to the entire Greenlandic community.
Royal Greenland is a cornerstone of Greenland's economy and a key player in the international fishing industry. We have been through challenging years, but we are now beginning to see progress. However, the work has only just begun. We need to further develop, strengthen our commercial focus, and ensure that we are at least as competitive as our largest international competitors.
My goal is for Royal Greenland to be both a well-run and competitive company while also living up to the social responsibility that comes with being Greenland's largest company. We need to focus on investments in the commercial activities we have here in the country, with the aim of creating results that both strengthen our global position and contribute to growth and opportunities in Greenland.
I look forward to – together with the board, management, employees, and owners – continuing the transformation that will make Royal Greenland an even stronger company for the benefit of Greenland. Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Maliina B. Abelsen for her efforts as chairperson of Royal Greenland's board since 2022," says Niels Thomsen.
The outgoing chairperson, Maliina B. Abelsen, states: “After three intense years as chairperson of Royal Greenland, I am now confidently passing the baton to Niels Thomsen. It has been an honor to lead the work through a demanding turnaround and the cleanup of engagements abroad, the launch of the INUA 2027 strategy, the strengthening of leadership in Nuuk, and the initiation of the construction of a new headquarters. It has required tough decisions, but the most important thing for me has always been that Royal Greenland contributes to the entire Greenlandic community. I am proud of the results we have achieved together. Thank you to the board, management, employees, owners, and stakeholders for the cooperation.”
In addition to the change in the chairmanship, the general meeting also welcomed Susanne Kure, who joins the board. Susanne has a strong financial profile and brings solid business and board experience from a number of companies, investment funds, and pension funds.
Half-year financial report shows positive trends
The extraordinary general meeting, which was announced in connection with the company's ordinary general meeting in May 2025, was held after the new Naalakkersuisut had time to familiarize themselves with their areas of responsibility – including the ownership of the government-owned companies like Royal Greenland.
The general meeting was also held following the announcement of Royal Greenland's half-year financial report for 2025 yesterday. The report shows an improvement of DKK 48 million compared to last year's result and a total of DKK 102 million compared to 2023.
