We have an obligation to use as much of the fish as possible
Since fish in the oceans is a limited resource, we need to make the best possible use of the fish once it has been caught.
The world’s population is around 7.6 billion and this number will increase in coming generations. By 2030, the world’s population is expected to total 8.6 billion, and in 2050, around 9.7 billion people. Because of this, we want to take responsibility for the maximum utilisation of the fish and shellfish passing through our factories. Greater use can be made of side-streams, resulting in new food products, while extracting proteins and oils from the process water can lead to new opportunities in the feed or ingredients industry.
Objective
We wish to produce and deliver fish and shellfish to an increasing number of people in the world and, as a minimum, in the same proportion in 2030 as we do today. This means that we must assess our residual resources’ potential and develop and utilise our resources to an even greater extent.
Status 2020
In 2020, at the factories in Greenland we utilise an average of 67% of the total volume of fish and shellfish. Our factories in Canada utilise between 40 and 50% of the resources.
Goal 2022
Calculation of utilisation at Group level, taking account of social conditions and energy-intensive logistics.
80% utilisation of Royal Greenland’s potential fish and shellfish resources at all factories and on all trawlers.

WASEABI optimises utilisation of marine resources
For a period of four years, Royal Greenland will form part of an interdisciplinary team of 13 partners with the shared aim of optimising the utilisation of side-streams from the seafood sector by developing new methods for the production of nutritional ingredients.
Initiatives
- Utilisation of prawn shells at more factories than in 2019.
- Extraction of protein and oil from process water.
- Increased export of lumpfish carcasses and crab shells.
- Development of new methods for maximum utilisation of resources.
Ambition 2030
Depending on species and production site, the utilisation of side-streams from existing end-products requires well-functioning logistics and the availability of manpower. The costs of trimming and refining side-streams, extracting e.g. oil and protein, and transporting these resources to another location, may often significantly exceed the commercial value. Nonetheless, our ambition is to continuously endeavour to increase the utilisation rate to the maximum level.
