Product groups’ carbon footprint

We wish to create a basis for the development of products with a small climate footprint

Products’ CO2e emissions are highly dependent on the individual product’s value chain.

A previous internal study has shown that the value chain for single-frozen prawns from Greenland, gives total emissions of 5.07 kg of CO2e per kg of finished product. Of this, fisheries account for 62% of consumption in total. For products based on double-frozen prawns, emissions are higher, due to the extra freezing and thawing process.

Objective

We will determine a method to calculate product groups’ CO2e emissions and thereby create a basis to develop products with a small climate footprint.

Status 2020

Procedure to be determined to calculate product groups’ carbon footprint. Method screened for iced prawns.

Goal 2022

Develop and test a scientifically based method to calculate product groups’ carbon footprint. The method must have third-party approval and be comparable with other equivalent industries.

Initiatives

  • Set a clear definition, delineation and method for the calculation of CO2e emissions for product groups.
  • Engage in a partnership for a model to calculate the carbon footprint for seafood-based product chains.
  • Compare own product groups with other food product groups.
  • Assessment of the customer requirement for climate labelling.

Ambition 2030

In 2030, we will know the carbon footprint of various product groups, based on transparent scientific calculations. This will make it possible for us to reduce CO2e emissions within specific product groups. Consumers will also be able to take climate footprint into account when selecting products.
