Greenland Halibut

Greenland Halibut

The Greenland halibut is a deepwater flatfish, known to different nationalities under many names. To Americans it is “Greenland halibut”, to eastern Canadians as “Greenland turbot” to the British as “Blue halibut”. A fish with an excellent mild flavour and firm, but tender texture.

Habitat

Greenland halibut is a bottom-dwelling fish which lives at depths from 200-2000 m, where it feeds on prawns and various fish. It lives in the deep cold waters on both sides of the North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans, but is especially abundant in the deep coastal fiords of West Greenland.

Biology

The cold ocean temperatures around Greenland, close to freezing, gives the meat a firm texture and a mild taste. Spawning takes place in early spring at depths of 650-1000 m. After spawning, the larvae move towards the shallower waters near the coast, gradually seeking deeper waters as they grow. The largest halibut live at app. 800 m. The halibut is a voracious eater and feeds on almost anything it can find; small and large fish, crustaceans, squid and plankton.

Catching Methods

Deep sea trawling or longline fishing from small vessels during summer or from dog sledge during winter. In Jacobshavn and the Uummannaq districts, which are the main areas for catching Greenland Halibut, dog sledges are used throughout the winter, when the fiords are frozen. The fisherman rides out on the frozen fiord on his dog sledge, cuts a hole in the ice and catches the fish using a special sliding device, which pulls the hooked long-line through the water.
