Greenland – the source of great seafood

As a Greenlandic owned company we take pride in our heritage and respect the traditional fishing and hunting traditions of the Inuit people.

Royal Greenland is closely connected to the Greenlandic community and the history and culture of Greenland. We are owned by the Greenland Home Rule Government and our headquarters is situated in the capital of Nuuk in the southern part of Greenland.

Facts of Greenland

Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. In 1979 Home Rule was introduced and in 2008 Greenland voted for incresed autonomy, effective June 2009.

Greenland is the largest non continental island in the world. However, large in size the country is population is few in number: today, there are only 56,000 inhabitants in a country of 2,166,086 km2.

The population of Greenland is predominantly Inuit, a people bearing an affinity and solidarity with the Inuits of Canada, Alaska and Siberia. Further information about Greenland.

A great fishing nation

Fishing is the all-dominating trade in Greenland and accounts for 95% of the total exports and forms the stable existence for one fifth of the Greenlandic population.

As the biggest company in Greenland, Royal Greenland is a vital player of the Greenlandic society and contributes substantially by being one of the top ten seafood companies in the world.

Respecting the ancient fishing traditions

For centuries the fishing and hunting philosophy in Greenland has been to live at one with nature. The hunters live with nature and follow the natural seasons. This philosophy is an integrated part of Royal Greenland’s business strategy today and pervades our overall approach to the seafood industry.
